Karen Miller is the owner of Zen Tengkara, a Colorado company that designs,

manufactures, and sells Tengkara rods, lines, and accessories. In this episode of Anchored,

I sit down with Karen to hear more about how the company was founded and how she handles innovation

and criticism. We also discuss Engels' well-fighting fish, Tengkara's history, and more.

Where were you born and raised?

I'm actually North Miami, Florida. Really? I'm a native Floridian

transplanted to Colorado back in 1999. I was raised in Hollywood, Fort Lauderdale,

Coconut Grove, Miami, you know, that whole South Florida area.

Right. Okay, so moving out of the South, was that a family thing? Or did you move when you were a

little bit older? No, no. I was in my 30s, mid-30s when I moved to Colorado. I just had a bunch of

changes with family. My mother had passed away. My father had left the state. I had a young son

and South Florida was feeling a little crazy, and I had friends that went back to high school,

living in Colorado that kind of convinced me to make the jump.

So yeah. Why Colorado? Were you looking for mountains and adventure? Or did it just seem safe at

the time? I was looking for change, but I think the outdoor piece of it appealed to me.

And of course, I had some friends here already. So the connection was nice. It wasn't just making like,

you know, a solo move without knowing anybody. So yeah. Yeah, that's a big call, especially as a
