My colleague Andrea Elliott joins us now from Harlem. She is the author of a new book, Her First Book,

it's called Invisible Child, Poverty, Survival, and Hope in an American City.

Andrea, thanks so much for being here.

Thank you so much for having me.

This book is based on a series of stories you wrote for The New York Times.

Tell us about that series and when you wrote it.

My path to Dessani began in October of 2012 when I was on the investigative desk at the Times

and I was trying to find a way into the story about the city's homeless crisis.

I wanted to specifically find a kid to write about.

At that time, there were more than 22,000 children in the shelter system.

It's a crisis that continues to this day but the numbers have dropped significantly with the eviction moratorium.

At that time, that population would fill Madison Square Garden just to give you a visual.
