This book is based on a series of stories you wrote for The New York Times.

Tell us about that series and when you wrote it.

My path to Dessani began in October of 2012 when I was on the investigative desk at the Times

and I was trying to find a way into the story about the city's homeless crisis.

I wanted to specifically find a kid to write about.

At that time, there were more than 22,000 children in the shelter system.

It's a crisis that continues to this day but the numbers have dropped significantly with the eviction moratorium.

At that time, that population would fill Madison Square Garden just to give you a visual.
