Catholics around the world continue to pray for his recovery, but this most recent health crisis is a reminder that can't lead the church forever.

As a native of Argentina, Francis is the first pope ever from the Americas and even from

the southern hemisphere. And his ideas about the role for Christians within a rapidly

changing world have surely been shaped by the places and the times in which he has lived.

The statements he's made on issues as contentious as homosexuality, abortion, divorce, and capitalism have struck some Catholics as not progressive enough, while others have found them a bridge too far.
