For today's first story, we are going to merge fine art with technology.

Late last week, researchers from a joint

project with the University of Nottingham and the University of Bradford, both in the UK,

reported using facial recognition technology to determine the authorship of a painting, long known as

the Debrecy Tondo. The work is strikingly similar to a famed

altarpiece by the Renaissance painter Raphael, a work called his Sistine Madonna, now in Dresden,

that portrays the Virgin Mary cradling a cherubic blonde baby Jesus in her arms.

It's also probably most famous for the two little angels painted at the

very bottom of the scene, the ones you have probably seen reproduced a million times over who are

resting their little chubby chins on their hands and their arms as they look skyward.

The facial recognition software has determined a 97% similarity rate in the Madonna of Debrisi to the Sistine Madonna,

and an 86% similarity rate in the case of the Christchild.
