It was

humble, made up in a small village in Afghanistan. The hamlet, nestled among the trees in the central mountainous region, was humble, made up of mud houses, a river burbled nearby.

It was home to farmers who had worked the land for decades.

But more recently, a group of foreigners had taken up residents, foreigners who were believed to be fighters

for the terrorist group Al Qaeda.

Suddenly, a team of elite specially trained US Army Rangers descended on the village,

accompanied by Afghan partner forces.

Gunfire rang out, shattering the silence.

There were shouts of fear of confusion.

Out of one of the mudhouses, a man and a woman emerged.

The woman was carrying a baby.

The man was wearing a suicide vest, which he quickly activated.

The explosion sent debris outward in every direction. The woman who had come out of the house was injured in the blast but still moving she appeared to pull at something

another explosive the Rangers didn't wait to find out one of them shot and killed her

in the aftermath of the raid, the Afghan and American forces searched the burning rubble and found a single survivor, a baby girl, not even two months old. Her head was bleeding and her leg appeared to be broken, but she was alive.

There was a debate about what to do with her.

Some of the Afghan soldiers claimed that she was a terrorist and suggested throwing her in a river nearby to drown.

But in the end, the American soldiers took the baby girl to a nearby to

the d' Major Joshua Mast, met the baby girl. He quickly bonded with her and decided that he would add this infant to his family, thousands of miles away, in rural Virginia.

That choice kicked off a bizarre tug of war that grew to involve
