The Hello and behind the news. My name is Doug Hinwood. In these troubled times,

a stabilizing anchor,

two guests and two segments. Vanessa Wills will talk about Marx's ethics, a topic the science heads often overlook, and Mathis Ebbinghaus will talk about the effects of the George Floyd

protests and police budgets. I was going to open this show with an extended commentary on

Trumponomics,

but as it turned out, I just don't have the time to fit it in. The idea was inspired by a question

from my friend and former behind-the-newsguess Lee Claire LeBerge, who wrote,

can you do a show in the Trump recession? Like, what is his idea? Who wins here? Is he actually

this demented? What is the model? I thought this was a great suggestion.

They also thought I could do that job as well as any guest. If I'd had the time, I would have made a couple of points.

One, you can't discount the fact that Trump, Musk, and company just have no idea what they're doing.

The tariffs are a grand gesture of the sort Trump loves, but if they're not tied to an actual industrial policy, they're just going to cause stagflation and chaos. Two, by their account, they're

undertaking a massive overhaul of the U.S. economy, de-globalizing it, shrinking government dramatically,

bringing back manufacturing. This is supposed to unleash a wave of prosperity. Again, they seem to

lack an actual plan,

and the government cuts will hurt lots of people with no payoff. And three, it looks like

they're using the government as a way for Trump, Musk, and their cronies to make a lot of money.

perhaps as soon as this afternoon.

In these troubled times, a phrase I've now used twice within a couple of minutes, but these

are troubled times, it may seem like a luxury to indulge in an extended discussion of Marx and

...
