Quinn Slobodian, making his seventh appearance on this mighty show, to discuss the disreputable

second generation of neoliberals he writes about in his new book, Hayek's Bastards.

This is his third book on the neoliberals and neoliberalism.

The first globalists, which came out in 2018, focused on the early decades of the

movement, which had roots going back to the Vienna of the early 20th century, but really didn't get

going until the founding conference, the Montpelin Society, at the base of that Swiss mountain in

1947. Their goal was to fight the socialism they saw as progressively encroaching upon liberal society,

liberal in the European sense, meaning minimal regulation of capital and capitalists.

They were never big on political freedom, in fact they supported regimes like Pinochet's

dictatorship in Chile, because they maximized freedom for entrepreneurs, even if that took mass

arrests and one-way helicopter flights.

But they are intellectually and politically serious and managed to take a doctrine that was once

extremely marginal to one that was hegemonic. Quinn's new book, Hayek's Bastards, Race, Gold,

IQ, and the Capitalism of the Far Right is about a successor generation, featuring people

like Charles Murray, co-author of the Bell Curr of the

1994 book that argued that intelligence was largely heritable, and some racial groups just had more

IQ than others, and Peter Brimelow, an extravagantly frank white supremacist. That tendency was always

present among the first generation, but discreetly so. Now it's anything but discreet, as we'll hear.
