long kind of galoshes very tall boots and then they hand us the hard hat, a big jacket. So we looked pretty incredible, I think, by the time we were led to that hole and told to very slowly carefully

cautiously start climbing down that ladder.

Hey everyone, Olivia here popping into your feed early this week to introduce you to Carly Severn.

I am an editor at KQEDD news and a reporter for Bakirus.

And I asked Carly to take us back to an assignment she was working on a few years ago in 2019.

A lot of folks had written into Bay Curious asking about a secret network of tunnels under San Francisco and I was like I want to report this story and I don't think I quite

realized what I was in for in multiple ways. I had also heard that and definitely thought they were just urban legend.

I think that every city has its own like version of that, but the delightful thing is that with San Francisco

it turned out to be 100% true.

I knew I had to get inside them for our story, but here's the thing. You can't just find

an opening and go crawling around under the streets of San Francisco or you shouldn't do that. That is illegal and it's also super,

super dangerous. So to get me into them legally and safely I had to work with the city of

San Francisco and the first thing they had me do was this training.

Construction workers often perform tasks in confined spaces and can face life-threatening hazards,

including toxic substances, electrocutions, explosions.

Hmm, sounds pretty intense.

It's called Confinement Training, and it's basically an online course I had to go through to prepare me to go underground and be in rather a small space.
