Lieutenant Varnham awaited the first light of dawn to reveal the wide valley of the little bighorn below.

With him were several crow scouts, the crows having their own axe to grind with the Sioux,

who were knowingly occupying

crow lands in this section of today's Montana, known then as the greasy grass,

prime hunting land for buffalo, deer, and elk.

Varnham's mission?

To determine the location and strength of the Sioux encampments in the valley.
