The Welcome back, everyone to one thousand one heroes, legends, histories, and mysteries.

0:33.9

Today's story is titled, 1001's famous folk heroes and legends, part one.

0:40.8

And I can already tell from the research I've been doing for this episode

0:43.9

that this is going to be a really fun one to do

0:46.7

because it covers every corner of the world

0:49.5

and picks up three categories on our show,

0:52.3

those being heroes, legends, and histories,

0:55.9

and we'll no doubt add a few mythological mysteries along the way.

1:00.5

What is a folk hero, you ask? I think we all have different answers.

1:05.7

As a folk hero, can be a real hero, a fictional hero, or a mythological hero,

1:12.5

and one thing they have in common is that their name, their personality, and their deeds have become embedded in the consciousness

1:17.8

of a people or culture, and they're often thought of and mentioned reverently in folk songs,

1:23.3

stories and tales, sometimes tall tales that seem to grow with time.

1:28.9

We'll start today with a mythological hero, a little guy with a curved back wearing a few

1:34.5

feathers on his head and playing a flute. Someone, we know not who, scratched his image on the

1:40.8

side of a rock a few thousand years ago, and since then he's appeared on

1:44.5

everything from shirts to pottery to golf balls. His name is Cocapelli, and he's a legend.

1:52.9

But folk legends aren't always good guys or heroes. One case in point today, being the story

1:58.9

of Australia's folk hero Ned Kelly,

2:01.6

who committed all kinds of crimes, but ended up being accepted, if not idolized,

2:06.5

by the people who believed that he was standing up against what was considered at that time

2:11.0

a brutal authority, brutal to the down and out.
