Kathleen Peterson has died at the foot of her staircase in Durham, North Carolina.

Her husband Michael says it was a tragic accident and he has lost the love of his life.

Law enforcement officials think differently.

Michael goes on trial for his wife's

murder in 2003. In the last two episodes we heard about the possible motives for

a killing involving money, Michael's bisexuality, and the revelation that another woman, Liz Ratliff, 17 years

earlier, had also died at the bottom of her stairs, and Michael was the last person to see her alive.

Today, never mind the motive, what about the physical evidence?

We know that Kathleen was dead

when the emergency services arrived at 1810 CEDA

in the early hours of Sunday morning, December 9, 2001. Chief

investigator Art Holland spoke to Aphrodite Jones for her true crime series

on the Discovery Channel. When you got to Peterson's house, what was going on there? When I first approached

the house, the amelances were still on the driveway. There was a fire truck in the driveway.

And most of the police personnel were situated outside.

There was a time when a medical examiner by the name of Kenneth Snell came in and he actually wrote a report saying

that Kathleen Peterson's death was quote due to the fall down the stairs.
