Summary

We sit down with previous guest and former Ranger and Delta Force operator Brad Thomas as he sets the record straight about what happened back in Mogadishu and how his recollection of one event (as he shared back on Episode 58) was different than what another person remembered.

Join hundreds of others with our weekly Combat Check-In Newsletter (www.combatstory.com/newsletter) to get a short email from Ryan each week about the show, life, and the military.

In the former interview, Brad describes a "jackass lieutenant" running around during the battle collecting fastropes because they were an accountable item. The individual in question listened to the interview and contacted Brad to explain what was actually going on.

Being the standup guy that he is, Brad immediately wanted to acknowledge this new information and share that we often don't recall things as they were.

Many will recall Brad gave up a promising musical career to serve, first with Ranger Battalion and then finding his way into Delta Force. His first combat experience was in Mogadishu in what we know as Black Hawk Down as part of 3rd Ranger Battalion in a true baptism by fire.

Since leaving the military, Brad returned to his passion: music. He gathered a group of veterans who now make up the band “Silence and Light” and saw far more success than they expected on their debut album.

We sit down today to discuss misinterpretations on the battlefield and clarify a situation discussed in Brad's interview from two years ago (Ep58).

Brad, thanks for coming back on.

0:02.6

Very interesting connection we just had this past week.

0:05.9

For those who recognize the name, obviously,

0:09.7

you and I sat down over two years ago to talk through your experiences down range and it's been, as we're just

0:17.3

talking before we hit record, you know, 250,000 people have probably listened to that that discussion and something came up just this past week that you wanted to address and that's why we're here right now so I'll kick it over to you.

0:30.9

Yeah, and thanks for having me. You know, it's it's tough when you make and do public things. You know, you try and be as accurate and correct as you possibly can when you reference a situation or talking about something.

0:46.3

But I felt like the thing that happened this past week with me related to the combat story, you know, episode that we did a couple of years ago.

0:56.0

Someone had just listened to it and it was talking, you know, this person reached out and said,

1:02.4

hey, I'm the person that you're referencing

1:05.8

when you talk about, you know, some jackass lieutenant running around in the streets picking up fast ropes.

1:12.0

And I know this person, you know, we've kept in touch.

1:15.1

And he gave me his reasoning and logic

1:20.0

for what he was doing and why he was doing it,

1:22.5

which made complete sense.

1:25.6

And basically, it was something that he got tasked with,

1:30.0

thinking that there were going to be follow-on operations, thinking that we may need these fast ropes

1:35.0

to go rope into the city to another crash site.

1:38.2

These are expended.

1:39.3

You know, they're off the he lows and there's no way to get them back. And you know, I felt like it was something that I owed him a public apology and correction because it was my perception of something that was happening in the middle of a very chaotic situation.

1:57.6

And then I thought to kind of further that thinking, you know, I know pretty much anybody that's been in the gun fight has

2:07.3

experienced this to some degree or another.

2:09.9

We see somebody doing something, we see an action, and it may not make sense. It may be that our memory is skewed of what actually happened. But I wanted to publicly say, you know, I completely get what what he was doing, why he was doing it, and, you know, say, I'm sorry, you know, for the perception or misperception that I had of this event in the fact that it's been
