On second thought, maybe I shouldn't have suggested to Michael Klean

that we meet up in a recording studio

for our main interview. To test levels, I ask him what he had for breakfast.

I had toast with honey. It was really amazing. Let me see. Let me get used to my little voice

in here and how it sounds, but I'm probably going to talk a little louder.

Yeah, that's probably about it.

I guess, wow, it feels strange because there's no echo.

You know, it has a different quality to it, just talking in this room.

Yeah.

You feel like your thoughts stop much sooner.

The point of a studio is that there's no other sound, and thanks to the sound absorbing walls, no echo. It gives you that clean voice that's unobstructed, but also really disembodied.

Just as one sits here, I feel

the different quality of space and the different quality

that that also generates in timing

of my speech,

the different quality that it generates
