If you look up a Scots dictionary, it'll tell you that a bothy is a rough hut

used by salmon fishers, shepherds, workmen and mountaineers. The Scottish hills are littered with boffies.

They tend to be pretty basic, but they're wind and waterproof, and they're free.

Anyone can use them.

For hill walkers and winter climbers, they provide shelter, somewhere to overnight,

and often are place to meet friends or strangers and socialise.

All the shelters need to be maintained, so some are adopted by volunteers,

others are cared for by members of the MBA,

the Mountain Bothys Association. I'm telling you all this, because recently I was invited to a rather unusual event, which featured a fascinating mix of folk, all of whom have spent years,

decades in some cases, using and caring for bothies.
