I'm joined by Dominic Nichols to discuss and assess the potentially very significant news that Vladimir Putin has announced a special, if very short, truth for Easter. Thank you very much for joining us.

So let's get straight into it. First, the facts. What do we know? What did Putin say, Dom?

Well, hi, Francis. So Putin has said that his military will cease, quote, all military operations, end quote, for 30 hours lasting from 6pm

Moscow time. That's about 4pm, or sorry, that is exactly 4pm, London time on Saturday to

midnight Moscow time, 10pm, London time, tomorrow, Sunday. So that should have started about

three and a half hours ago as we're recording.

Now, in a very heavily staged and filmed meeting, Putin ordered General Valeri Gerasimov,

that's Russia's chief of the general staff, the head of the armed forces, to cease all military

operations and said, we assume the Ukrainian side will follow our example.

Russia's MOD has confirmed all military actions have been ordered to stop,

adding that the decision was guided, in there words, guided by humanitarian considerations.

They say they expect Ukraine to do the same.

Putin has said that Russian troops will be ready to react if there

are provocations or violations of the truce, adding the effectiveness of the ceasefire will, quote,

test Ukraine's sincerity in pursuing peace talks. So that's the facts, as we have it from the Russian side,

Francis. Well, there's a lot we're going to need to pull apart from that in a moment,

but let's just look at what the Ukrainians are saying. So President Zelensky has just tweeted

as follows. The corresponding proposal for a full and unconditional 30-day ceasefire has gone

unanswered by Russia for 39 days. The US made this proposal. Ukraine responded positively,
