Summary

This is an interview with MIT neuroscientist, Dr. Alan Jasanoff about his book The Biological Mind: How Brain, Body, and Environment Collaborate to Make Us Who We Are. We talk about what he calls the "cerebral mystique" and why it is important to remember because the brain is embodied it is not autonomous. Welcome to Brain Science, the

0:05.0

podcast where we explore how recent discoveries in

0:07.5

neuroscience are unraveling the mystery of how our brains make us human.

0:12.1

I'm your host, Dr.. Ginger Campbell and this is episode 146.

0:16.7

Before I tell you a little bit about today's episode, I want to give a shout out of

0:21.1

congratulations to Dr. Pamela Gay for her upcoming induction into the Academy of

0:26.7

Podcasting Hall of Fame. I think Dr Gay is the first science podcaster to be

0:31.6

inducted and her show Astronomy Cast launched way back in 2004.

0:37.8

She has recorded over 300 episodes. I actually nominated her but I'm sure that I wasn't the only one.

So even though brain science is a podcast that focuses on neuroscience,

0:51.0

we don't just talk about the brain because you are not just your

0:56.7

brain any more than you are just your body. Over the years my guests have

1:01.9

debated the meaning of the term mind, but one thing that is certain is that the human mind requires the interaction of our brain, body, and the environment.

1:13.4

For long-term listeners, this might seem obvious.

1:16.8

But today's guest, Dr Alan Jazinoff, argues that there is a tendency to view the mind

1:22.0

as identical to just the brain. In his new book, The Biological

1:27.0

Mind, How Brain, Body and Environment Collaborate to make us who we are, Dr. Jazinoff from MIT explores the consequences

1:37.4

of having such a narrow view.

1:40.6

I really consider today's conversation to be a continuation of my previous

1:44.6

discussion of this topic back in episode 109 which I called avoiding

1:49.6

neuromania. Dr. Jazinoff's term for the problem is the cerebral mystique, and I hope you will find his ideas as stimulating as I did.
