My name is James Rogers, and in this podcast I talk with Dr Agnes Grumworld Spear MBE, who is author of Women's Experiences in the Holocaust, who betrayed the Jews, and the other

shindlers. But in this podcast Agnes talks about her personal history, her family history,

because she is one of the youngest survivors of the Holocaust.

She was born in Budapest in July 1944 and her and her mother was sent to the Budapest

ghetto in November 44. Agnes explains the hardship of the ghetto and how her mother survived and how they were liberated by the Soviets in January 1945.

This is a part of history that we really don't talk about enough.

And the experiences in Hungary and in Budapest really show the atrocities that were dealt at the hands of the Nazis and Hungarian fascists during the Second World War. Agnes, thank you so much for coming on the podcast.

Now, when historians talk about the horror of the Holocaust, they often focus on the

Warsaw Ghetto and Auschwitz or Bergen-Belsen

and the harrowing stories of individual hardship.

But as a result, places like the Budapest Ghetto and the Holocaust

Holocaust in Hungary are often overlooked.

But this is your history because as a baby you were

taken to the Budapest ghetto is that right? That's correct I was born in July

1944 in Budapest to Hungarian Jewish parents and in November 44 my mother and I was sent to the

ghetto which only really lasted for three months.

So perhaps you can tell us a little bit about the ghetto and what life was like for the people

who were taken there?
