In the past few weeks, we've done two episodes on religion.

One, a debate, asking if we need a religious revival, and then a follow-up conversation with Ross Dalfit, asking how people who grew up

in the secular West can actually find faith. Today, I have the last installment of this

intellectual and religious inquiry, at least for the time being.

It's a subject I'm fascinated by.

And today I'm asking a new question, which is, what is the role of religion as a political force in this country?

My guest today, Jonathan Rauch, argues that Christianity is a load-bearing wall of American civic life.

In other words, the success of our liberal democracy depends on a healthy Christianity to support it.

And if that Christianity falters, the American project will falter too.

We get into why that is in this fascinating conversation.

It's also a very interesting subject for a person, and this is Jonathan, who happens to be an atheist gay Jew. And Jonathan

doesn't just say we need to embrace Christianity. He goes a step further. He says that Christians

need to look in the mirror and reconsider how

Jesus would approach American politics today. Jonathan Rauch is a senior fellow at the Brookings

institution, and he just wrote a book about all of this called Cross Purposes, Christianity's

broken bargain with democracy. I ask him about the breakdown of religion and Christianity specifically and the impact it's had on our culture and on our politics and fundamentally on our democracy.
