All the woman wanted was to look normal.

When Suzanne, a pseudonym, was a little girl in Canada,

her nose got crushed in a car accident.

She grew up with scars and dents on her nose that left her horribly self-conscious.

She felt that she never fit in.

Around age 18, she started using drugs and eventually began stealing to support her addiction.

She ended up in prison in the 1950s near Vancouver.

She made the most of her time there. She entered drug counseling. She took

classes on typing and English grammar. But however useful, these services could not

fix her main source of distress.
