Duncan Penny Q.C. Southerk Crown Court, July 2020. Shortly before midday, officers from the Metropolitan Police Force arrived at a block of flats

in Canning Town, East London. They had visited the brick-built building on Vandum Close the previous day.

Still after pressing the buzzer on the intercom several times,

they receive no response. Officers were at the property for a second time carrying out a welfare

check on an individual who, they had been told, was receiving treatment for cancer. However, he was no longer answering his

phone or the intercom to his flat. A friend to the tenant in question was concerned and wanted to make

sure the homeowner was not incapacitated, unable to ask for help.

There were also reports of a peculiar smell emanating from the residents,

so this only hastened the need to understand what was going on.

Now Saturday, April 27, 2019, officers again tried the intercom, and for the second time they were met with no response. After gaining access to the communal entrance, they wandered towards the front door of the ground floor flat in custom house.

They forced their way in. Once inside, the officers began to search the one-bedroom property.
