Hello, I'm Kirstie Young, and this is a download from the Desert Island Discs archive.

This edition may be slightly different from what was actually broadcast, but it is the only version we have.

It comes from the British Library's radio collection.

The recording didn't contain the guest's eight music choices, so we've rebuilt the original

show by using discs from the BBC Gramophone Library.. For rights reasons we've had to shorten the

The program was originally broadcast in 1981.

And the presenter was Roy Plumley. On our desert island this week is the television comedy writer, Carla Lane.

Carla, how well could you adjust yourself to extended loneliness?

Not very well. I really do not like my own company.

So it's going to be a very dreadful experience.

Would music help?

Yes. You have a very miserable allowance of eight records.

Have you any musical skill yourself? None. None at all. No.

Do you sing? Well, I make noises in the bathroom, but I can't sing.

Any plan in choosing your music? Are you choosing nostalgicly or?

Well I've chosen music which would make my stay bearable, and a couple of them are very nostalgic,

but the rest are simply, give me certain moods.

Where do we start? What's the first one?

The first one is the Shostakovich Fifth Symphony and I find this very staring and it gives me a great determination. The The And the Oh, You're not going to be. an excerpt from the Shostakovic 5th Symphony Anthony Orchestra conducted by the composer.

It's an open secret, Carla, that you come from Liverpool.
