I like working with wood.

This is red cedar and it's got a beautiful scent.

There's a lot of potential with wood.

And I enjoy working with it but I'm conscious of the fact that I'm at the low skill end of the scale.

I'm not a cabinet maker and I'm certainly not an artist in wood.

Duke Christie, however, is both. He spent 30 years as a cabinet maker.

Which is interesting because cabinet making is all about imposing order and stability on a material which inherently wants to be neither.

So a couple of years ago, he gave up cabinet making and he started working with green wood instead, which is notoriously unstable.

And then to make it even more unpredictable, he started using fire.

I saw his work first at the Ash Rise Exhibition at the Royal Botanic Gardens in Edinburgh

and was really taken by it, these beautifully sculpted wooden vases,

with the grain really jumping out at you

because they're sort of par scorched in places

and they were hollow and there was interesting gaps in them and things

I just fell in love with them and I thought
