When people look back at film in 2023, most I think we'll talk about Barbinheimer.

But something equally notable, I believe, was the number of talented and cool female filmmakers whose films kicked absolute ass critically and or commercially during the year.

Among them, Greta Gerwig, Ava Duvernay, Emerald Finel,

Sophia Coppola, Justin Trié, Kelly Fermon Craig, Chloe Dumont, Nicole Halofsner, Emma Seligman, A. Vrockwell, Maggie Betts, Elizabeth Chai Vossarelli, and my guest today.

A 35 year old KoreanCanadian playwright-turned-filmmaker whose largely

autobiographical feature directorial debut, Past Lives, is now nominated for the Best Picture Oscar, and whose script for it has brought her an Oscar nomination for Best Original Screenplay.

Filmaker magazine called past lives as confident as filmmaking debuts come, while the Washington Post described

her as a supremely confident filmmaker of exhilarating artistic promise who has

made a quietly spectacular writing directing debut.
