Chapter 6. Chasing the Fox of Gangsterdom

February 22, 1930.

Raymond Crane Neck Nugent, killer and machine gun expert,

will be returned to Cincinnati from Miami Beach, Florida, where he was arrested

on a warrant charging him with the murder of Harry Solic. The gunman, said to have been a member of Killer

Burke's Chicago gang, was tending bar in a Miami Beach speakeasy when a police squad raided the place and placed him under arrest.

Declaring that he had been in and out of Florida for two years, Nugent said, quote, I've got nothing to worry about, unquote.

Cincinnati detectives identified Nugent late Friday night and planned to start home with

their prisoner today unless Nugent fights extradition. Detectives carried with them extradition

papers signed by Governor Cooper for Nugent's return. Hamilton Police Chief John C. Calhoun said,

quote,

Although Nugent is blamed for shootings in Butler County,

we will not attempt to have him brought to this county for trial,

as there are many airtight cases reported against the man in other cities.

Fingerprints of a suspect under surveillance at Miami, Florida

were identified by the Bureau of Identification as those of Raymond Crane Neck Nugent,

gunman and gangster wanted in Cincinnati and Toledo for three murders.

Cincinnati detectives wired Miami police

to arrest the suspect and a copy of an indictment for murder would be forwarded immediately.

Nugent wanted for the slaying of Harry Sallick, 38 years old bootlegger and Oakley on August 2nd, 1927, also is linked with almost a dozen gang murders in Cincinnati and vicinity.

Cincinnati police, however, have been able to prove only the murder of Harry Salick.
