Three years ago, this month, I sat down with Chaston Buttigieg and South Carolina to talk

about his husband's historic presidential run and his role in it.

Little did I know then that he was revealing what would appear six months later in his

memoir, I have something to tell you.

Today, Buttigieg is out with a young adult's version of his memoir.

Sadly, his timing couldn't be more perfect, as LGBTQ people and works about their lives

come under attack in school board meetings and state legislatures across the country.

But he isn't shying away from telling his story.

In his conversation, first recorded for Washington Post Live on May 10th, Chaston Buttigieg talks

about why he rewrote his memoir for young adults, why he thinks the far right is going

after LGBTQ Americans, and what he hopes for his two children when they are old enough

to read, I have something to tell you.

I hope that the significance of the book actually fizzles, you know, with time.

Because I hope that we raise our children in a country where they don't have to be afraid

of being who they are, where they don't have to fear running away from their family

or losing their loved ones or their friends simply for existing and being who they are.

So Chaston, this isn't just an adaptation of your memoir for young adults.

This is a rewrite, why?

Yeah, I wanted to write the book I wish I would have had in middle school.
