Summary

The Christian hope is a life-shaping certainty that our ultimate future is the eternal love and glory of God, the new heavens and new earth. The uniqueness of the Christian hope means every area of our lives is shaped by that belief, that future. And so the Christian hope has an enormous impact on how we face and process suffering, disappointment, difficulty, troubles. In 2 Corinthians, we’re told three things about suffering: 1) the inevitability of it, 2) the pattern of it, and 3) the future of it. This sermon was preached by Dr. Timothy Keller at Redeemer Presbyterian Church on May 16, 2004. Series: Living in Hope. Scripture: 2 Corinthians 4:7-18; 12:7-10. power is from God and not from us. We are hard pressed on every side, but not crushed, perplexed,

but not in despair, persecuted, but not abandoned, struck down, but not destroyed. We always carry

around in our body the death of Jesus so that the life of Jesus may also be revealed in our body.

1:01.8

For we who are alive are always being given over to death for Jesus's sake so that his life

1:08.2

may be revealed in our mortal body. So then, death is at work in us, but life is at work in you.

1:17.0

It is written, I believed, therefore I have spoken. With that same spirit of faith, we also

1:23.4

believe and therefore speak, because we know that the one who raised the Lord Jesus from the dead

1:29.0

will also raise us with Jesus and present us with you in his presence. All this is for your benefit

so that the grace that is reaching more and more people may cause thanksgiving to overflow to the glory

of God. Therefore, we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are

1:50.5

being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory

1:57.0

that far outweighs them all. So we fix our eyes not on what is seen, but on what is unseen.

2:05.0

For what is seen is temporary, but what is unseen is eternal. To keep me from being conceded

2:12.1

because of these surpassingly great revelations, there was given me a thorn in my flesh,

2:17.4

a messenger of Satan, to torment me. Three times I pleaded with the Lord to take it away from me,

2:24.1

but he said to me, my grace is efficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.
