At just 29 years old, John Lewis Abernun was already an ex-convict, and he wasn't looking to turn his life around.

Late in the year of 1969, Abrun knocked on the door of a northwest Dallas home.

A seven-year-old boy answered, and Abrin asked if his parents were home.

He told the boy he was going house to house, asking residents of the neighborhood if they needed yard work done.

She called out for her 10-year-old daughter, who was also in the home, and ordered both her and her young brother to a bedroom and told

them to shut the door.

Abrin disrobed Dorothy and raped her three times on her kitchen floor and then decided it was best not to leave any witnesses.

He tied her to a chair in a bedroom with pieces of cord he pulled from his own pocket,

retrieved a five gallon can of gasoline from the garage, returned, and poured the fuel over

her nude body and the bed beside her with the intention of burning her alive.

However, Aiburn didn't smoke, so he demanded that Dorothy provide the match that would certainly be her demise.

But neither Dorothy or her husband smoked and she could not provide Aibron with what he was looking for, even if she wanted to. But he didn't believe her.
