Once upon a time, there lived a cook who was called Gertie. Short for Gertrude, Gertrude,

Gertie wore shoes with little red heels,

and my how she did love them.

When she walked, she loved hearing them click on the floor,

and she would walk left and right and admire them.

Gertie worked for a merchant who had a lovely manor house.

She lived on the grounds in a small cottage

and was very pleased with herself at how good a cook she was.

And it was true.

She was quite a good cook.

How well, Gertie also loved to taste the food she was cooking. And she would often taste it until she was satisfied, which meant not much of it was left.

A good cook must try the food they make so they know if it's tasty or not.

She would say to herself.

One day the merchant came to her and said,

Gertie, I have a guest coming for dinner.

Prepare me your most delicious fowls.

Of course, master, you shall have a most wonderful meal, she replied.

So, she went and bought two chickens.

She seasoned them and put them on the spit over the fire.

They will roast just perfectly for dinner, she thought.

Then she went on and made potatoes and fittles.
