Welcome back to surgical ICU rounds.

My name is Dr. Jeffrey Guy.

Today I want to talk about something we discuss frequently in rounds in intensive care unit,

0:34.9

and that is what exactly is a colloid.

0:37.1

I hear that term getting thrown around a lot,

0:39.4

and it seems a lot of times as we're throwing that term around, we don't have a real good understanding of it. I like to think that a lot of

0:43.7

what we do in the intensive care unit, at least the biology and the chemistry, is really strongly

0:49.4

founded on what I learned in high school science. It doesn't seem to be, you know, I really am in the opinion

0:55.5

that a lot of the care decision, the science,

0:58.7

isn't that high brow.

1:00.3

It's very basic elementary science.

1:03.1

And one of the first things I learned

1:05.3

in my ninth grade biology class

1:07.9

was the concept of osmosis.

1:10.0

And osmosis was defined then at that point in time,

1:12.8

is the movement of water across a semi-permable membrane, easy for me to say.

1:19.2

Well, we'd like to say that osmosis is the movement of water through a semi-permable membrane

1:25.2

from an area of high concentration of solute, so low concentration

1:28.9

of solute, into a region of higher concentration of solute, basically bringing those concentrations

1:34.3

on either side of that membrane into equilibrium. Now often when we're talking about the use of

1:40.6

intravenous fluids, the topic of using a colloid will come up. And whether a
