Hello and welcome back to Get Fit Guy. This is Kevin Donne for the 111.11th time. This week I had the

0:12.4

world's shortest email from a listener. It was so short that it was a single sentence long.

0:18.2

Now call me old-fashioned, but I usually start and end emails with some kind of

0:22.9

hello and end them with a your sincerely kind of vibe. Anyway, the single sentence email was,

0:30.3

what air purifiers do you recommend? Well, I can't say I recommend any because that would be a task that in order to be fair would require me to first of all devise some kind of scoring system, which would allow me to analyze the benefits for and against of air purifiers to compare them.

0:52.0

Then I'd have to go out and test every single air purifier and rank

0:55.8

them according to my scoring system. Then and only then could I recommend an air purifier. Hope that

1:02.4

makes sense. It should because it's deductive logic. In order to recommend an air purifier, I need to

1:09.5

test all air purifiers.

1:11.6

I have tested no air purifiers, therefore I cannot recommend an air purifier.

1:18.8

Now, I did actually have a personal anecdote about an air purifier that I had here,

1:24.4

but the powers that be have decided that I do not live in a universe with free will

1:30.0

and have determined that it should be removed. So insert, you know, your own little story

1:36.9

about air purifiers here. So instead of me making some arbitrary suggestion now about air purifiers

1:43.1

that I would never do in this possible world,

1:45.2

but cannot rule out another possible state of affairs in another world. I will do an episode

1:50.7

on some of the common myths about air purifiers instead. Hopefully that will do. So myth number one

1:58.6

is that air purifiers reduce your immunity.

2:03.3

So one of the claims around air purifiers would be what we call an informal fallacy,

2:08.9

which is it's a false comparison, where people will say, playing in the dirt when you're a kid

2:15.2

is really good for developing your immune system because it exposes you to germs.

2:20.2

Therefore, if we remove germs, viruses and bacteria from the air that surrounds us, we'll reduce our immunity through mechanisms of reduced exposure.
