Unfictional is KCRW's program of documentaries and stories that we just started this last year.

We're trying to invent new creative ways to tell radio stories and to be a forum for independent radio producers.

This show really represents KCRW's commitment to taking risks and encouraging

unusual, unexpected, and most of all compelling radio. I'm going to play you an excerpt from

the very first episode of Unfictional.

It's the story of Connie and Pedro.

Connie was featured with her mother on an installment of StoryCorps on public radio stations across the country.

That episode told the story of Connie's mother Blaken. on public radio stations across the country.

That episode told the story of Connie's mother, Blanka,

and the family's illegal crossing of the border from Mexico,

and how Connie's parents worked hard enough

for Connie to go to college. Pedro is Connie's husband. He's also a first

generation child of illegal immigrants, but after he was laid off from his job as a customs

broker, Pedro did something completely unexpected from someone with his background.

He became a Border Patrol agent.

So how did you feel when you first put on that uniform?

It was intimidated because they have us in that paramilitary environment.

But as you start earning and passing the grades and the physicals,

and you start earning it and you start feeling proud of it.

So you do love your job?

I love my job, yeah.
