Summary

Paul & Amy slide through 1993's Jamaican bobsledding comedy Cool Runnings! They learn which parts of the script were true and which were exaggerated for the film, praise John Candy's generous straight man performance, and ask whether formula is always a bad thing in filmmaking. Plus: Doug E. Doug (Sanka Coffie) recalls talking the production team out of some bad ideas. This is the third episode of our Underdogs series; next week’s film is Chariots Of Fire! Hello everybody and welcome to Unspooled. I'm Amy Nicholson. And I'm Paul Sheer and this is the show where we are trying to find the hundred best films of all time.

0:38.0

It doesn't matter who made them when they came out. We are going to find them and we're going to put them up for judgment here.

So far Amy and I have gone through the A.F.I. list. We have found forty that we believe are worthy enough to be shot into space to represent all of film.

0:55.0

But right now we are on a quest to find the other sixty. We're in this specific genre that I'm kind of loving Amy, which is true sports films.

1:19.0

These movies have really been lifting me up.

1:21.0

You seem lifted. You're all glowing.

1:25.0

Do you find that? We've been watching some nice films recently. Even the sadness of Brian's song.

1:33.0

I kind of still left with a little pep in my step.

1:38.0

Yeah, I feel like this is a very narrow strip of film that in a way opens up into a whole world.

1:45.0

These films, they're called monalities and that they all stir the heart. They're all emotional.

1:52.0

And they do it in ways that take drastically different turns.

1:56.0

And so I was thinking about it almost in Goldilocks terms. We're in our third movie of this. And so far we've had one film where the underdog team wins.

2:03.0

One film where the underdog team dies. And now we're having one team where the underdog film loses.

2:09.0

And so at least it's a little bit different than like these all have to end in the same way.

2:14.0

How can we be inspired by stuff that takes such drastically different terms.

2:18.0

And so the effect that these films have on audiences and how they get there I think is really interesting.

2:22.0

No, absolutely. And I can't, you know, I can't say enough how much I've really been appreciating a good cry.

2:30.0

I mean, did you cry at this film? Did you have any tears, any emotion?
