Summary

What might change if you let yourself feel every emotion without running from it? Agnes grew up in a "work hard, play hard" family, where alcohol was a way to ease stress. After a childhood filled with trauma, she carried so much pain into her teenage years, struggling to connect socially. Drinking made her feel alive and fun, becoming her go-to for managing stress, social situations, and intimacy, following a doctor’s advice. Over time, she realized that the more she drank, the more lost and unhappy she felt. In this episode, Agnes shares with Annie how she stopped running from her feelings, reclaimed her voice, and built trust in herself. By fully embracing her emotions, she created a life of clarity, strength, and purpose, helping others as a certified coach. In this episode, Annie and Agnes will discuss: - Experiencing childhood trauma involving alcohol - Drinking in high school to fit in socially - Using alcohol to boost confidence and ease stress - Feeling guilt and shame about drinking habits - Following doctors’ advice to drink for relaxation or intimacy - Shifting from weekend drinking to drinking for any occasion - Getting curious about her relationship with alcohol - Struggling to make clear decisions after drinking - Building new routines for social situations - Discovering joy in helping others as a certified coach - Trusting herself and embracing emotions without fear - And other topics… Related Episodes: EP 256: Reader Question – How to Loosen Up for Sex Without Alcohol https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-256-how-to-loosen-up-for-sex-without-alcohol/  EP 448: What I Wish I Knew Before My First Drink – The Thief of Joy https://thisnakedmind.com/ep-448-what-i-wish-i-knew-before-my-first-drink-the-thief-of-joy  EP 733: You Are Not the Problem, Alcohol Is – Naked Life Story https://thisnakedmind.com/you-are-not-the-problem-alcohol-is-naked-life-story-ep-733/  Ready to take the next step on your journey?  Visit https://learn.thisnakedmind.com/podcast-resources for free resources, programs, and more. Hi, this is Annie Grace and welcome to This Naked Mind podcast, and I'm here with Agnes. Hi, Agnes. How are you?

0:22.4

Hi, Annie. I'm good. How are you?

0:30.2

I'm good. So good to have you on. So why don't you take us back to the beginning in your relationship with alcohol? Where did it all start for you? Well, first of all, alcohol was always a big part of my life.

0:36.6

It was already in my family household. So I come from a

0:41.3

European background. I was actually born in Poland. And then when I was four, I immigrated to Canada.

0:50.0

My parents at that point, they were working two jobs.

0:55.6

Then on the weekends, they used that time to basically unwind,

1:01.0

and there was a lot of drinking involved.

1:04.1

So the way that I was exposed to alcohol was, you work hard, you play hard.

1:09.3

So during the week, you're working two jobs, and on the weekends, you play hard. So during the week, you're working two jobs and on the weekends,

1:13.7

you are relaxing and letting loose. So for me, even growing up, I always thought that

1:20.5

drinking on weekends was never an issue, the people that were drinking every day, having a

1:26.3

glass of wine with dinner, that they're the

1:27.9

ones who had a problem with alcohol, not the ones that did it on the weekends. So that's what I

1:36.2

learned already at a young age. And now, through that, whenever there was alcohol that was

1:42.7

involved, then it obviously, it was a very unpredictable

1:46.8

type of environment when the drinking became really heavy within my family. So there would be a

1:55.6

lot of arguments between my parents, but there would be physical abuse there.

2:01.9

So violence was a big part of it.

2:03.8

So you just never really knew what was going to happen.

2:07.7

And everything was at that point, my father was drunk.
