Summary

“We've got a government that's trying to gaslight the whole nation to say that racism doesn't exist.”

As the third Black woman ever to be elected as an MP, and then instated as a government Minister, Dawn Butler has been vocal on the disrespect that Black women face in politics.

As an outspoken campaigner herself, Butler was criticised in 2019 for calling Boris Johnson a liar in the House of Commons. She was subsequently asked to leave the Parliament grounds that day.

Whilst calling for the former Met Commissioner, Cressida Dick, to resign, she ironically found herself being stopped by the police whilst driving with her friend (who is also Black).

After facing a long battle with breast cancer in 2021, she found inspiration to write her first book, ‘A Purposeful Life’, where she draws on the repeated times she’s been called a liar after facing racism and sexism both in politics and outside of it.

In today’s episode of Ways to Change the World, Labour MP Dawn Butler speaks to Krishnan Guru-Murthy about calling Boris Johnson a liar in Parliament, white feminism in the Labour party (and at large) and her ambitions to be the next Mayor of London. Being a Black person in a white-dominated space, she also tells us why wearing a lime-green suit in a sea of grey-suits was her way of realising you don’t have to fit in.

Hello and welcome to Ways to Change the World. I'm Krishnan Garimurthy and this is the

podcast in which we talk to extraordinary people about the big ideas and their lives and

0:13.0

the events that have helped shape them. My guest this week was the third black woman

0:18.6

to be elected as a Labour MP. She was the first black woman to speak at the dispatch box

0:24.7

as a government minister and she's just written a book called A Purposeful Life which

0:29.7

she started writing when she was recovering from cancer. Yet Dawn Butler is often attacked

0:37.9

if you tweet about her, if you tweet about interviewing her, you'll get a load of responses

0:42.5

back calling her a liar or somebody who makes things up. And her book is fascinating

0:48.6

because it takes all of these things head on and is like a sort of a series of stories

0:53.5

of aggressions and the way you've dealt with them. It's very fascinating I think. Thanks

0:57.4

for coming in. Ah, thank you, thank you for having me. I'm going to actually begin at

1:01.0

the end because you're wearing lime green and your chapter at the end of the book is called

1:06.2

the lime green suit. Explain the lime green suit. So the lime green suit is all of another

1:13.3

story of me buying a lime green suit and walking into an event and just the look on everybody's

1:20.7

face is like, what is she wearing? You know, how can she be wearing a lime green suit when

1:26.8

we are a grey suited organisation? And I could just see all the cogs wearing in their

1:32.6

heads. You know, it's like, oh my god, you know, she can't wear a lime green suit because

1:36.4

our customers expect us to all be in grey suits and it just made me think about how we need

1:42.4

to disrupt the grey suited organisation. Not try to fit in. Not try to fit in. Is it an acceptance

1:49.4

that you don't fit in and that you spent a lot of time perhaps trying to? Yeah, I mean,

1:55.9

in the beginning there's been times when I started my work in the city as a computer programmer.

2:01.6

So I've got plenty of grey suits and in the beginning you do try to fit in but the whole point is
