0:13.1	Today we start our tenth book of the Bible and this book contains some of the most beloved
0:17.3	stories in the whole Old Testament.
0:19.5	To backtrack a bit on how we got here, Israel started out as just Abraham.
0:24.0	God promised him offspring and land.
0:26.4	God gave him the offspring little by little, but his descendants really multiplied during
0:30.7	the 400 years they were enslaved in Egypt.
0:33.5	God used Moses to lead them out of slavery and followed that with 40 years of testing
0:37.6	in the wilderness to train their hearts to know that he is the one true God.
0:41.6	Then God brought them into the land he promised Abraham all those years ago.
0:45.8	They spread out in that land, but it was so nice not to be in slavery or in the wilderness
0:50.1	that this new life of luxury and ease made them forget God.
0:54.0	They did whatever they wanted.
0:55.9	God raised up judges as military leaders to drive out the enemies who were leading the
0:59.6	mystery, but this didn't deal with the problem of their hearts leading the mystery.
1:03.6	They did whatever they wanted and things grew continually worse in the promised land.
1:08.2	The Israelites were sure their problem would be solved if only they had a king.
1:12.7	And that's where we find ourselves today.
1:15.2	It's approximately 1050 BC and we open with a couple, Elkana and Hannah.
1:20.7	Their Levites, the tribe of priests living in Ephraim, the tribe who love to fight.
1:25.8	And Hannah is Baron.
1:27.3	Elkana has a second wife who is not Baron, but the text seems to indicate that he loves
