When we’re in our 20s and 30s, we see ourselves everywhere in sports marketing and branding. Then, somewhere along the way, we vanish, as though women past 40 or 50 don’t run, ride, hit the weights, or live active, vibrant lives. This week’s guest, Velocio Cycling Apparel ambassador Joan Swain, is on a mission to change that. As she says, “We are athletic. We are beautiful. We are intelligent. We live full lives and we wear your clothes, your shoes, your accessories and ride your bikes. I challenge all to make this as attractive and marketable as it actually is.” We talk about all that and the importance of improving our visibility and changing the narrative around aging this week.
Along with being an ambassador for Velocio and World Bicycle Relief, Joan Swain is a senior leader in the Professional Services technology sector with a track record of business and culture transformations including change management, people management/operations, project/program management, resource management, data migration, internal coaching, customer service advocacy, partner management and onboarding, driving strategic direction, and sales enablement. You can follow her journey at instagram.com/joanlswain. Check out her photo spread with Velocio here.

0:31.1 | Hello, strong, feisty women. |
0:34.0 | So I have one this week for you that I know will hit a nerve somewhere inside every single |
0:41.0 | one of you. It's about ageism. A few weeks ago, Velocchio Ambassador Joan Swain posted a series of |
0:49.3 | photos of herself, unvarnished, unretouched, honest, raw photos of her 65-year-old self. And she included a long, |
0:58.8 | moving caption that included these words. Turning 65 has been an age that has been a challenge |
1:06.4 | for me to admit. Not because I'm afraid to age, and not because I'm afraid of what age has in |
1:13.2 | for me. It's hard because I've allowed myself to be impacted by the ageism which exists in my |
1:18.8 | world, which I have confronted starting around the age of 55. So here I sit, having felt the |
1:25.6 | undertones of ageism for almost 10 years now, and realizing |
1:29.4 | just recently how much this is impacting my ability to relish my time in life rather than hiding |
1:35.8 | it. |
1:37.0 | She goes on to say, this photo shoot is about a celebration of aging and a solid nudge to brands across all industries, including cycling, |
1:47.3 | that not only do we exist, but we are not so inspired by the constant flagrant flogging of |
1:55.5 | youthful beauty. As much as I appreciate it and recognize its value for a certain portion of the market, |
2:02.3 | I am tired of not being recognized for the contribution we as a group make. We are athletic, |
2:09.8 | we are beautiful, we are intelligent, we live full lives, and we wear your clothes, your shoes, your accessories, and ride your bikes. |
2:20.3 | I challenge all to make this as attractive and marketable as it actually is. |
2:27.3 | And with that, I knew I had to have her on the show, because I firmly believe that any stigma and or shame that |
2:37.1 | menopause still carries is rooted in ageism and our fear of aging as women. |
