Dissociative identity disorder, previously called multiple personality disorder, is a condition characterized by the presence of two or more distinct personality states, or "alters." The disorder arises as a response to childhood trauma — each alter may have a unique name, personal history, and characteristics. To learn more about DID, we're joined by Ella, who lives with over 30 alters. They tell Eileen about their diagnosis, life with alternate personalities, and how they've used Instagram to debunk myths around DID.

1:37.0	Yeah, so we've got a online presence on Instagram and we do like advocating for people with the ID and OSD and kind of just spreading awareness and educating people because yeah there's so many misconceptions and the media presents us really badly so
1:57.6	mm-hmm so can you tell me a little bit about like where you grew up a little bit about your upbringing? Yeah sure. So we've grown up in London and lived here basically all life in England.
2:09.2	What's family life like? Yeah, we're really lucky. We've got a really good family very close. I've got two
2:16.1	younger sisters. Yeah, sadly quite a lot of other people with the ID have kind of complex family systems and they're not very supportive and stuff but
2:26.9	yeah we're very lucky in that aspect. Yeah I feel like that's kind of a
2:30.0	misconception that everyone with the DID has to come from like a super chaotic or traumatic
2:36.7	upbringing. Yeah. So in your case it seems like that's not true. Yeah, we're lucky on that front.
