Summary

In this episode, my guest is Dr. Peter Attia, M.D., a Stanford and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine-trained physician expert in improving human healthspan and lifespan. Dr. Attia is also the host of The Drive podcast and author of the best-selling book Outlive. We discuss the NAD pathway in human cells and its possible links to aging and health. We evaluate how supplementation can augment molecules in the NAD pathway; we compare NAD, NMN, and NR, different routes of administration, their safety, and bioavailability. Then, we discuss the broader research and clinical literature on longevity to decide if supplementation with NAD, NR, NMN, rapamycin, or resveratrol can indeed extend lifespan. Finally, we each describe our supplement regimens and compare the role of supplementation to behaviors such as sleep, nutrition, and exercise for longevity. We also discuss whether tests of biological age are true indicators of aging and whether normal radiation levels increase cancer risk. Listeners of this episode will learn if supplements purported to improve lifespan show any efficacy and the behaviors and other factors that can prevent disease and extend lifespan. Welcome to the Huberman Lab Podcast, where we discuss science and science-based tools for everyday life.

0:06.0

I'm Andrew Huberman and I'm a professor of neurobiology and ophthalmology at Stanford School of Medicine.

0:15.0

My guest today is Dr. Peter Itia.

0:18.0

Dr. Peter Itia is a medical doctor who did his training at Stanford University School of Medicine and Johns Hopkins School of Medicine.

0:25.0

Dr. IT is one of the world's most trusted voices on the topics of health span and lifespan,

0:30.0

and with good reason. He is known to systematically review the research literature

0:34.3

the clinical trials and he maintains an avid clinical practice so when it comes to the

0:39.0

topic of whether or not a particular molecule or supplement or prescription drug is indeed something that we should

0:44.6

be thinking about and perhaps even taking in order to improve our health span and lifespan.

0:49.4

Dr. Attia is the person that I choose to sit down with and discuss it.

0:53.0

So today we are going to discuss the so-called NAD pathway.

0:57.0

This is a pathway that's received a lot of attention in recent years

1:00.0

as a potential target for improving lifespan, that is for living longer.

1:05.0

Today we discuss the various molecules in this pathway and the various approaches to increasing

1:10.7

NAD, which is the end target goal of anyone that's trying to augment the NAD

1:16.1

pathway, so to speak.

1:17.5

So for instance, we talk about taking NR versus NMN versus direct infusions, or even orally taking NAD.

1:26.0

And we compare them in terms of both what's known

1:30.0

and what is not known about their ability to get into cells and any efficacy they may have for either longevity or health span.

1:38.0

Dr. Aetian I compare and contrast the literature on this, again both research and clinical literature, and we discuss whether or not the If so or if not, the reasons for that.

1:52.9

We also each go through our own supplement regimen,

1:55.8

which of course reflects what we do believe
