comrade, Derek Davison, and we're very excited to welcome to the podcast today.

Someone I've been reading for a very long time. I think, Peter, you don't remember, I'm sure,

but I met you at Duke, I think in like 2007. You did like a small group seminar thing,

and we talked about Jewish day school. I think I talked about Schector, and you had...

I remember that, actually. Yeah, very yeah very very long time ago almost 20 years ago

jesus christ um but we've invited veter uh peter to talk about his new book being jewish

after the destruction of gaza a reckoning peter thank you so much for joining us thank you so

just the first question that i want to ask is is um i think a criticism some might have is why center being Jewish

at this moment, even if it's in the service of Palestinian liberation. What are you trying to do

with the book? I think it's a totally legitimate question, and it comes out of people's very

genuine frustration that Palestinians still remain soft and so marginalized and dehumanized in these public conversations in the United States that what Edward Said talked about famously, the lack of permission to narrate still very much is the case today.

On the Jewish feelings and sensitivities and identity often tends to kind of

take center state even in the midst of this destruction of an entire society in Gaza. But I guess

I, for me, I think about what is my comparative advantage in trying to change this horrific U.S. policy and the complicity of the community that I'm

part of. It seems to me if there's going to be a change and there's going to be Palestinian freedom,

American policy has to change. And to some degree, the American Jewish community has to be part
