Summary

When we ask a broad question to a large group — students, an audience, attendees at a meeting — we often get nothing in response. Plenty of the people probably have something to say; they just haven't been asked the right question.

0:53.2	When we have a group gathered together like a class of students, an audience sitting in an auditorium,
0:59.2	or even something small like a book club, a department meeting, or a Zoom call,
1:04.0	the person running the show will sometimes start by asking the group a question like,
1:09.2	how's everyone doing?
1:11.2	And what do they often get?
1:13.2	Silence. Nothing.
1:16.2	Maybe one or two extroverts will offer a word to break the awkward silence,
1:21.2	but it pretty much never generates any kind of quality response.
1:25.2	Because what's supposed to happen?
1:27.2	Am I as a student in this class going to A, take the floor and respond just for myself?
1:34.2	Like, thanks for asking. I'm doing okay.
1:36.2	Because that would feel like I'm sort of assuming that I should be the center of attention, right?
1:41.2	And then B, there is the question of honesty.
