Hey everybody, it's Joe Trippy, and welcome back to an election day special of that Trippy show with Alex Ashlow.

Today we have a very special guest.

James Carbell has been speaking out and trying to get the Democratic Party to learn some important

lessons for decades. And now he's joining us today. James, as a new documentary out, Carvel,

winning is everything stupid. It premiered in August, it's really something you've got to see.

And I've got to tell you, if you've not seen it and you love this country

and want a better and stronger Democratic Party, make sure you watch it. I'm going to go on a bit

of a rant here. Most of you don't know that I worked with James in 1986 in Bob Casey's

campaign for governor of Pennsylvania. I was in my late 20s full of piss and vinegar,

an idealist who was impatient with the progress of the Democratic Party. Hell, I'd work for

Ted Kennedy against President Jimmy Carter because he wasn't liberal enough. And then I ran smack

dab into a bunch of lessons that James taught me in that campaign in 1986 that have helped

me throughout my career. The most important one being you can't change a damn thing if you don't

win, that you have to focus in a campaign on things people care about and don't get distracted.

That as Democrats, we have hope and we want other people

to have hope. And that means talking about things that people care about. But there's two lessons,

I think, that led me to joining the Lincoln Project. And that's to win, you have to be relentless,

tough and aggressive. And when you're hit, you hit back harder.

James, I cannot tell you how much I appreciate you and what amazes me about the documentary

was here you are 38 years after we work together, still trying to get the Democratic Party

to learn those lessons. It's truly amazing the difference you make and the shit

you're willing to take for speaking out the way you do. James, thanks for being with us on Election
