The details of the murders at the small house in the 4600 block of Deerfield Drive in Pensacola, Florida were horrific.

And the evidence will show that when Richard came home from work on that Tuesday, the defendant shot Richard in the side of the head and slit his throat just as he did his mother and John.

The victims were 78-year-old Van Seale Smith and her two sons, 49-year-old John Smith and 47-year-old Richard Smith.

Assistant State's attorney, Bridget Jensen, told a jury nearly five years later that Van Seale spent the majority of her time sitting in the recliner in her living room and ordering from QVC.

Her husband of 47 years had passed away in 2012 and so she lived at home with her two adult sons, Richard and John.

Richard, also known as RT, worked as a computer specialist for the Department of Homeland Security.

He was not married and didn't have any kids.

He basically worked, went home and took care of his mother and brother John.

John reportedly functioned a little slower than most people from an issue at birth.

He was a cart pusher at Walmart and had worked there for over 20 years.

He also wasn't married and didn't have any kids.

Neighbors would later say that the three of them were not very social, that they mostly kept to themselves.

But on Friday, July 31, 2015, officers with the Escambia County Sheriff's Office responding to a wellness check found all three murdered in their home.

Agent Andrew Smith was one of the first officers to go inside.

The doors were all locked but they were able to gain entry by using a credit card on the back door.

As soon as he walked in, Agent Smith smelled a foul odor like a dead body.

He saw a small white dog running around and noticed dog feces on the floor.

He and his fellow officers called out Sheriff's Office, come out.
