It was just before 7 PM on the evening of June 14th, 1962 when 25 year old Juris

Schlesers climbed the three flights of stairs to his mother's apartment in Boston's Back Bay District.

Juris was anxious to be in time.

His mother Anna was a devout member of her nearby Latvian Church, and the young man knew she would give him hell for making her

late for services.

On that evening the two of them were supposed to attend a memorial service for the victims

of the Russian invasion of Latvia during World War II.

Juris knocked at the door of Apartment 3F and waited, but there was no sound of movement from

within.

At first he wondered if perhaps his mother had gone to the store so he went downstairs to the foyer to wait for her.

That was when he noticed that his mother hadn't picked up her mail.

By a quarter to eight, Juris was growing increasingly worried so he went back upstairs.

Then he made up his mind, took a few steps back, and made a short run at the door, smashing

it in with his shoulder.

The apartment was dark inside. Juris cried out in pain as he

stumbled into a chair that had been left laying in the middle of the narrow hallway.

This convinced Juris that something was really wrong.

His mother was notoriously tidy and would never leave anything out of place like that.

The only sound he heard inside the apartment was the incessant

Scritch, Scritch, Scritch of a record skipping in the record player.
