Summary

Now THIS is truly a conversation you won't hear anywhere else. My friend, television show runner Stacy Rukeyser, joins me to talk about making R-rated art when you're a mom. Stacy has written on some really great shows over the years, but she was tasked with creating Netflix's first foray into erotica with her show Sex/Life back in 2021 and it brought up some questions about making this type of creative content when you're a mom. Stacy rightly points out that men likely wouldn't be asked (or be asking) the same type of questions, but it was a fascinating conversation to explore. Stacy shares her fascinating Hollywood career trajectory, the column that broke open a One Tree Hill scandal, and the differences working in female-led writer's rooms. This episode is a bit of a curve ball, but I think you'll be riveted. Welcome to the 10 Things to Tell You podcast. I'm Laura Tremaine. I always have at least 10 things to tell you,

0:18.7

and you have 10 things to tell. This is a show where we believe

0:24.0

that sharing yourself will make you less lonely. This episode is a curveball in the best way,

0:35.2

but it's also such a small slice of the creative community that could even

0:41.7

have it. Today we are talking about making R-rated art when you're a mom. And my guest, who is also

0:51.5

my friend, Stacey Rukeizer, actually started this conversation with me

0:57.5

offline, off the mic, years ago, in one of the very first times that we ever met.

1:03.5

At the time, she was knee-deep in making Netflix's first foray into erotica, a show called Sex Life that Stacey created, wrote, and ran from 2020 to

1:17.0

2003.

1:18.7

Sex Life was far from Stacy's first show.

1:21.4

We're going to talk a lot about her career trajectory in this episode, but it was the first show that

1:27.3

was this explicit.

1:29.8

Stacey is a mom of two boys, and when we first met, she was hungry to talk to my husband,

1:36.1

Jeff and I, about how we handle some of these R-rated dynamics as parents.

1:42.9

If you're new to the podcast or you haven't heard me talk about this much, my

1:47.0

husband Jeff created Jackass.

1:49.6

It's a TV show and became a movie franchise.

1:52.4

He has also made R-rated documentaries and a very R-rated scripted movie also for Netflix

1:59.0

about Motley Crew called The Dirt. So our family is not new to the

2:04.3

R-rated art conversation as parents. We just don't have very many people to talk about it with,

2:11.4

which is exactly why I wanted to do this episode with Stacey. We spent the first half hour talking

2:17.3

about Stacey's career in Hollywood,
