Nonverbal Learning Disorder (NVLD) and Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) bring unique strengths and opportunities, showcasing the extraordinary capabilities and resilience of those who experience these conditions. In our latest podcast episode, Linda Karanzalis, a board-certified cognitive specialist, shares her enriching personal and professional insights into NVLD and ADHD. She highlights how these conditions enhance everyday interactions with unique social perspectives and innovative problem-solving abilities, while also discussing the positive impacts of emotional depth they can bring.
In this conversation, we celebrate the often-overlooked strengths of NVLD, examining its synergistic relationship with other neurodivergent conditions like ADHD and autism. Linda underscores the critical need for accurate recognition and appreciation of NVLD within the medical community to further empower those it affects.
With over 25 years of experience supporting individuals with NVLD and ADHD, Linda Karanzalis authored Misnamed, Misdiagnosed, Misunderstood and established ADDvantages Learning Center, a pioneering program for neurodivergent learners. Additionally, she serves as a social ambassador for the NVLD Project and hosts the podcast NVLD & Neurodivergent Pioneers. Her valuable insights into neurodiversity have been featured in the US Daily Times and ADDitude magazine.

0:00.0 | Hi, it's Tracy. Before we start, I have a request. |
0:05.0 | Okay, it's a little weird, maybe even a lot weird, but hello, six and a half million downloads on my podcast, |
0:12.4 | and still we haven't chosen a sponsor, right? Yeah, they just haven't been good enough for us and that's a little weird too. |
0:20.0 | So I decided I'm going to treat this like a sponsorship spot. |
0:25.0 | Many of you know Marcus, my son, who's been the inspiration behind this podcast, |
0:30.0 | the book, my programs, anything at all to do with ADHD well he is graduating from |
0:36.1 | NYU this may and boy are we happy that he did it in four years. |
0:42.5 | So anyway, Marcus loves to travel. |
0:45.1 | And so he's spending six weeks by himself traveling to five countries in South America. |
0:50.1 | I don't know about you, but there's no way in hell that I would go to even one country alone. |
0:56.4 | And so we gave Marcus a very low budget. This trip is a combination of his birthday and |
1:01.4 | graduation gift, and he figured it all out himself. |
1:05.2 | He speaks some Spanish but he hired a Spanish tutor from Ecuador a couple weeks ago, months maybe, |
1:11.3 | who's a professor at a university there, and this professor is helping him with his conversational Spanish. |
1:17.0 | Marcus also changed his phone to Spanish only, and all of his apps, and he only watches Spanish TV in preparation for this trip. |
1:26.9 | So that gives you a little bit of an idea of what Marcus is like. |
1:31.5 | Now, Marcus would ultimately like to earn a PhD in psychology. |
1:35.6 | He's fascinated by the brain, learning differences, |
1:38.4 | and particularly how dyslexia impacts math. |
1:42.4 | For the near future, though, he wants to work for a couple of years in New York |
1:46.1 | City. I never thought he'd say that. He was always looking for more nature. So anyway, he's going on this |
1:52.2 | trip and what he's trying to do is find a job that he can come back to. |
