Then this suburban mom took to the floor of the Michigan State Senate to passionately and brilliantly

rebuke a right-wing colleague who had cravenly accused her in a fundraising appeal of

plotting to groom children and burden them with guilt for slavery.

Her speech went viral and Senator McMaro gained a national following as one of the most intriguing

young progressive leaders in the nation.

I sat down with the industrial designer turned politician recently to learn about

her story, Michigan's role in our national politics and the wrenching impact of the war

in the Middle East on her suburban Detroit district, which is home to many

Arabs and Jews.
