Summary

By far the number one question parents ask about is managing cell phones. Just when you think you've set some guidelines they go right out the door. What's the best age to allow cell phones? Does Dr. Ken still recommend allowing complete freedom with these things at some point? We cover these and other important things to review with these stupid devices including some thoughts on parents' own usage of cellphones. Dr. Ken references the "Wait Until 8th" campaign - https://www.waituntil8th.org/ Got questions or feedback? We want to hear from you! And I know parents are struggling to figure out what to do and how to monitor and how to keep things in lines in their own home. But also, I always think about this, especially as summer approaches and my kids have more free time. You know, they're not having to set their phones aside for the school day anymore. And so it especially gets out of control as we get closer to the summer months.

And I get asked about it probably more than anything else.

1:10.7

It's an addiction for parents as well as their teenagers. It's a struggle.

1:16.4

You know, and I'll just say something about that, that if you're a psychologist, you're looking at addiction like as a particular kind of model of behavior and treatment.

1:26.2

And the question is, this comes up with

1:28.5

video games, for example, are the addicted, am I addicted to my phone? You know, I don't know.

1:36.5

All I know is that it's problematic and compulsively repeatable behavior. And that's enough to start thinking about, what are we going to do,

1:47.4

whether it's addiction or not. It is just constantly there.

1:52.5

Okay, yes. I probably wasn't using the accurate term for that. I'm just using the layman's

1:58.8

term for it. I know every parent is saying my kid is like they're inseparable.
