0:00.0 | Hello and welcome back to AckRack. I'm Jed Wollpa and I'm thrilled to have a great show for you today with two amazing guests, both of whom as it turns out, we're not only residents at Hopkins with me, but we're also chief residents. They're fantastic. |
0:29.0 | People, fantastic physicians and we're going to talk about a really interesting topic, which is the transition from being a trainee to being an attending. They've both made that transition and they've made it very successfully. |
0:41.0 | And so I think it'll be really interesting to think about how that can be really optimized because many of you listening are either students or residents and you're going to be making that transition at some time and you're going to be really interested to hear some of the tips these guys have. |
0:57.0 | So I want to welcome Dr. Kia Sedji and Dr. Steven Fryberg and let you guys start off by first. Let me thank you for being on the show and then ask you just to introduce yourselves a little bit. Talk about your background, your training, you know, anything you want to add to what I've already said and kind of how you've gotten where you are, what you do now. |
1:14.0 | Yeah, thanks for having us, Jed. So I know you probably can't tell the difference between our voices. My name's Kia Sedji. I'm currently a cardiothoracic anesthesiologist at ANOVA Fairfax, which is in Fairfax, Virginia, just outside of DC. |
1:29.0 | As Jed had said, I did my anesthesia residency training at Johns Hopkins and did a chief year as a part of my see three year. I went from there to Brickham and Women's Hospital where I did a cardiothoracic anesthesia fellowship. |
1:43.0 | And my first job out of training was here at ANOVA Fairfax and I've just completed one year of training. So I'm about a year in, I've experienced just out of just out of training. |
1:54.0 | Great. Thanks, Kia. And you know, I am shocked to just have learned, I think after, you know, what, five years of knowing you and working quite closely with you that I've been pronouncing your name wrong the entire time. I apologize. |
2:09.0 | So thank you. |
2:11.0 | Yeah, okay. |
2:12.0 | Very short anecdote. My uncle and my dad still argue the pronunciation. So my dad says Sedji. And so that's what I've been brought up saying. So, but either way could be correct. |
2:22.0 | Fantastic. Thank you. I will try to keep that in mind moving forward in our friendship and relationship. Thank you. |
2:27.0 | All right. And folks, frequent listeners of the show will know Dr. Pryberg very well, but Stephen for folks who maybe are tuning in for the first time. Why don't you introduce yourself to? |
2:36.0 | Sure. My name is Stephen Pryberg. I am a cardiothoracic and general anesthesiologist in Orlando, Florida. I would say about 60% of my practice is what you would call cardiothoracic, including open heart surgery. |
2:50.0 | Heart and lung transplantation, mechanical circulatory support, major brascular surgery, as well as electrophysiology and structural heart. |
2:57.0 | And then probably the rest of it is a little bit of everything. And I really enjoy that variety in my practice. I get to do OB, neuro, ortho, blocks, a little bit of healthy peeds. |
3:07.0 | I really enjoy that variety. I've been with this position for three years now. I was just recently made a partner, which was very exciting. |
3:14.0 | Congratulations. Thank you. But in terms of training, I, as some might know, did my anesthesia residency at Johns Hopkins as opposed to it also did a chief year, which I was very honored and humbled to do. |
3:27.0 | As opposed to going north like he did, I just went a little bit further south and did my cardiothoracic fellowship at Duke, which was an amazing training experience as well. |
3:35.0 | And then took that knowledge to Orlando where I'm not originally from South Florida. So kind of kept it somewhat close to home. |
3:42.0 | And it's been an absolutely amazing experience. I love the job I have and the people I work with. I've tried very hard and been quite successful in recruiting other Hopkins alum to this practice. |
3:53.0 | We've got a pretty strong Hopkins representation there. And my name for some reason provides almost as much trouble as it does for, I guess, he has name does because they just butcher right and left, especially when I answer a spectral link very frequently. |
