Summary

Between 1992 and 1999, four men in South Australia murdered 12 people - most of whom were friends or family members. In May 1999, investigators were working on a missing persons investigation when they discovered barrels hidden in an old bank vault in Snowtown, South Australia. The remains of 8 people were found inside the barrels, and when they learned the extent of the crimes that had been committed, the “bodies in barrels” murders became known one of Australia’s most horrific cases. 0:36.2	this podcast. A lot of people may know at least the name of it because it was a movie that I feel like maybe not people have
0:46.0	watched but you've like heard of or you know the name of it and it's an Australian
0:52.3	case so today we are talking about the Snowtown murders also known as the
0:57.6	bodies in the barrels murders.
1:00.3	Oof. Yeah and it is a rough one just blanket trigger warning. We are going to be talking about some pretty horrific details. I will try to give a like proper trigger warning before we hit those details, but just know this is definitely a rough one.
1:18.8	Okay. On May 20th, 1999, a horrific discovery was made in the small town of Snowtown, South Australia.
1:28.4	The 400 person town that is located about 145 kilometers or 90 miles north of Adelaide. is a quiet
1:35.0	quiet outer suburb of the city.
1:38.0	But on this day in May 1999,
1:41.0	it was nothing but quiet as police found something that would turn the small town upside down.
1:49.7	South Australian police were investigating the disappearance of 37-year-old Elizabeth Hayden, a woman
1:55.8	who was reported missing by her brother about six months earlier.
1:59.9	During their investigation into her disappearance, the essay police came across an old bank
2:06.2	fault in Snowtown. And this was like just across the street from the local pub. It's a small town,
2:12.2	so it was a bank that had closed down. The bank was empty, but it wasn't like an
2:17.4	abandoned town by any means. Okay. But when they entered the vault of the bank, that's when they discovered six plastic barrels.
2:28.0	And inside each barrel was
2:34.1	decomposing human remains. That is absolutely horrific.
2:36.9	Oh my God.
2:38.6	By the next day, Snowtown was swarming with media trying to learn what was going on.
