Academic, author, & ordained minister Michael Eric Dyson joins Bad Faith to debate the merits of voting for Kamala Harris specifically -- and Democrats more broadly -- as increasing numbers of the party membership acknowledge that they require significant reform after their 2024 electoral defeat. Are those claiming that "Bernie would have won" in 2016 and 2020 right? Or is there a case to be made for the more centrist Democratic Party approach -- even now? Rarely is someone with as large a platform as Dr. Dyson willing to join a progressive podcast for a rich debate on progressive strategy, so this one is a real treat.

we have to stop focusing on who these people are and what they quote unquote represent in terms of

0:05.2

their physical appearance and more about who they represent because of who's paid them and filled

0:09.6

their campaign coffers. I'm what you on that. I'm what you on that. But here's my point. When you said,

0:14.6

let me turn this around. It ain't my podcast, but I want to ask you, since I got a smart person like you here,

0:18.8

what is the alternative? What is the practicable,

0:23.3

allowable, permissible politics that can be exercised in order for to yield a benefit to the people

0:30.5

that you and I are both concerned about? What is that? Okay, so there's two things. Even if a Green Party

0:35.4

doesn't win, I think you have to look to the historical precedents here

0:39.9

and recognize that when there is a strong outside party, like we had with the Communist and Socialist parties in the New Deal era,

0:50.7

that it was the labor organizing and outside political agitation from those groups that

0:56.6

forced an FDR-type figure to adopt the new society programs that continue to be the bedrock

1:03.4

of our social safety net.

1:04.8

So even if you don't believe that the Democratic Party will or should fall, everybody who

1:09.4

wants the Democratic Party to be better and not just give it

1:12.1

lip service like, oh, I agree with the left, but no, genuinely wants the Democratic Party to serve

1:17.4

its people to root for a third party to push it to where it needs to go. Secondly, I would say,

1:23.3

I personally don't think the Democratic Party is going to be moved. I think Post Citizens United, the full on embrace of money and politics by both parties is a very difficult thing to untangle. They're never going to vote to unwind those interests. You have people like Nancy Pelosi who are multi-millionaires who have earned an enormous amount while they were in office somehow who oppose bills to preclude her from

1:45.2

insider training every time those bills threaten to come to the floor.

1:49.1

They're never going to vote against their own interests.

1:51.0

And I think that we have to support third parties.

1:52.8

It's going to be a long road.

1:53.8

It's going to be hard.
